  • Mr Loi had been a tremendous help in my A level journey. When I first came to his tuition, all I had to my name was a U grade for math promos and a PSLE cert (I was an IP student, hence no O level cert). Needless to say, I was worried about my results. However, Mr Loi assuaged my worries, painstakingly explaining the relevant concepts and making sure I had sufficient practice, all while being not only humorous but also sincere.

A Stanford U psychologist has pointed out: there’s no such thing as a math person. It’s just a matter of mindsets and attitude towards learning. One fixed and one inclined towards growth. I used to be fixated on the idea that i was unable to do well because I was just bad at math. But Mr Loi has helped me shatter the daunting glass ceiling that prevented me from achieving my best. To him, it was all about the important concepts, concepts that could make or break what you were doing. True enough, without any idea of what you’ re doing; no matter how much you practice on your own, you wouldn’t succeed, because you would just be fumbling in the dark

His strategy of blending conceptual learning through relatable anecdotes (he used pizza to explain integration and volume!!) and practice precisely tackled this problem.

Admittedly, the journey hasn’t always been a smooth sailing one. A transformation from a U grade for promos to a B grade for the following exam required grit and hardwork, and Mr Loi was there with me every step of the way. The bombardment of homework (that he emphasized I was supposed to do only when i had time ) was actually a blessing in disguise. But when you bite the bullet and you succeed, it makes the hard work all worth it.

Through his tutelage, I gradually became more confident and convinced that math was not as difficult as I thought. Got my A in the end for my A level exam! Thank you Mr Loi for your kind guidance every step of the way, for perpetually motivating me; encouraging me to step out of my comfort zone to practice the topics that i hated. Thank you!! ^^

  • I would like to thank you for all the guidance you gave him for the past two years of tuition under you. He is more confident and has shown tremendous improvements. He got A for H2 math. Thanks so much for your guidance and hard work to transform him from a “U” grade student to “A” grade student.

  • I first decided to take up Mathematics tuition in JC when I got my JC1 mid-year examination results. (U Grade — 4 out of 50) On my first lesson, Mr Loi could already tell that my foundation was weak because I didn’t pay attention in lectures and did not do my homework. Mr Loi made it a point to instill in me the awareness that JC math was about constant practice and consulting, not something that can be grasped at the last minute, a few months before the A-Levels. To this day, I am grateful for Mr Loi’s constant sharp but helpful nagging that caused me to be aware of the A-Levels that were drawing nearer day by day. Under Mr Loi’s tutelage, I learned not to fear the seemingly difficult, unfamiliar questions and worked extremely hard. His method of teaching is clear, systematic and unbelievably effective. I didn’t notice my progress but within about 2 months from my first lesson with Mr Loi, I found myself somewhat keeping up with my math tutorials in school. With a stroke of luck, I scored an A in my promotional examinations, which pulled my overall grade up, so much so that I was able to clear promotional criteria. In JC2, I prioritised my CCA and did not attend classes with Mr Loi until June, when I had stepped down. When I returned, I realised my standard had deproved tremendously and I was starting to score Ds and Es. Despite all this, Mr Loi was patient and understanding, and was willing to teach me all over again. Nearing the A-Levels, Mr Loi would hold consultation sessions, which helped me to clear my doubts. Other than that, Mr Loi always emphasised the importance of having timed practices with past year A-Level papers and prelim papers, which really helped me to reveal my blind spots and the gaps in my knowledge. When these gaps appeared, he would tirelessly review the chapter with us from the beginning. If not for Mr Loi’s good advice, selflessness and patience, I probably would not have been able to eventually score an A for H2 Math in the A-Levels.
    THANKS FOR EVERYTHING, MR LOI!!!!!!!!

  • Mr Loi is an excellent teacher who genuinely cares for the best interest of his students. His teaching methods are fool-proof, effective and applicable. He does not spoon feed students with formulas but instead challenges them to grasp the concept. I found this to be very useful. I was always apprehensive when approaching challenging questions but Mr Loi encouraged me to tackle them with confidence. I am eternally grateful for his help and would never have been able to achieve an A for H2 math without his dedication and effort. Thank you!

  • Thank you for helping me to improve my math for 3 years! Your effective strategies and funny jokes have certainly made lessons with you both interesting and useful! Thanks so much for your patience in teaching me!

  • In my first year, my maths was fine. However, when I went on to year 2 I struggled to understand statistics. Somehow, I found it challenging. I did not join Mr Loi’s class till July, which was quite late. I was desperate to see a change in my results. Of course being in a class with students from MJC, VJC and RI where they were doing so well was intimidating. Mr Loi is a funny teacher and is fluent in what he is teaching. He will not hesitate to nag at you if u skip class or do your work slowly T.T but it is only because he cares. I was still struggling with my maths but I was going for frequent lessons. He gave ample practices. At the end of the day, I got an A for my H1 A level maths. It was a huge jump from a U to an A and I only have Mr Loi to thank. Hard work, constant practice and nagging from Mr Loi was what I needed.

Don’t hesitate to join Mr Loi’s class, you won’t regret it ^^

  • “Math very simple one, only you all think so difficult!”

This has got to be one of Mr Loi’s pet phrases! Indeed, he is an amazing tutor at simplifying difficult concepts into easily digestible information, and simply brilliant at reinforcing those concepts into your mind. Math is not about memorizing formulas alone; it is about grasping the appropriate concepts and to be well-equipped with the necessary skills to deal with the different types of questions. After all, hardly any question you see is going to be repeated in the next exam. It is all about your fundamentals. That is what I learned under Mr Loi’s unwavering and patient guidance.

My basics were not there in JC Year One, I messed up concepts, and I got extremely confused and frustrated reading the horrendously long lecture notes. Tutorial questions always seemed manageable, but examination questions were a nightmare. Needless to say, test questions still remained a nightmare to me up to JC Year Two seeing that I am not that mathematically inclined. It was not easy to catch up with the basics when I joined Mr Loi’s tuition only in JC Year Two from April. However, what changed was that I could more or less understand which concepts was needed for the questions, and in some cases maybe come up with a semi-legit answer. However, the A level practice questions were so doable after six months of tuition under Mr Loi, and hey, I guess the A level examination is the most important after all right? I just put the school tests behind me and focused on A levels.

Apart from being a great tutor for mathematics, he is a naturally humorous person, and this definitely helps in keeping the class alive and enables us to stop falling into our dreamland after a tiring day at school. He also periodically advices us to mind our health, and to sleep more, because these factors are important in ensuring long term success in your final examinations as well. I did not have the best health in JC last time, and I certainly slept a lot lesser than I should perhaps 3-6hours depending on the days and the commitments I had. This is no good, as Mr Loi would say. Sleep more and your brain would be more energetic, and you would be more alert in answering questions as well.

In retrospect, I am so glad that I went for tuition at Mr Loi’s center. It helped me a great deal, without which I would still be floundering in a sea of unfathomable mathematical concepts. To reap the best outcome from his guidance however, I would undoubtedly recommend that existing J1 students sign up for tuition early! I started too late and it was no fun catching up. Starting early gives you a head start as well as more practice, and this is imperative for math. However it is not too late to start tuition even in J2, and I have seen success stories by people who started in early or mid J2 as well. However, apart from strong guidance, the caliber of the students would matter as well, and that was what I always thought was a strong reason as to why some students excelled in mathematics and some did not, however, this is Not an excuse, because my awesome tutor would say this….

If you are not smarter than someone else, you just got to work harder.

All the best to existing and future tutees!

Thank you so much, Mr Loi ^^

  • When I first joined the class midway through secondary 3, my mathematics results were constantly at the Ds and Es. I was struggling with the subject and could never catch up in school. I hated the subject. Lessons at Mr Loi’s didn’t make it better, initially I was taking hours to complete a few questions and felt dejected because he would demand again and again for me to think through and attempt those questions before he would eventually teach me how to. The starting phrase was scary, but that was also the start of a new beginning (my route to loving mathematics hahaha).

Under his guidance, I learnt to be more confident of my answers and he instilled in me a systematic yet straight-to-the-solution technique of resolving questions. He would cater the lessons to meet individual’s pace of learning and taught the syllabus in sequence accordance to what he felt would be most beneficial to his students’ understanding of the topic (it really helps, especially for vectors!). I began to see results and had my grades improving. It startled me that I could ever manage a B in my mathematics exam, and that was for my JC1 promotional exam. Thankfully, that B stayed with me through my entire JC2 and fortunately, it didn’t for my A levels -.-“” I had achieved an A for my A levels H2 mathematics!

From a student who had zero confidence in mathematics to one who loved and enjoyed the subject, I would not have done it without the help of Mr Loi. Behind all his constant nagging, scolding and sometimes somewhat annoying taglines – like how I was goin to fail my papers, how I could see him again next year when I’m retaking my A levels etc – he is a very dedicated and funny tutor who cares a lot about his students. Even in times of ultimate stress i.e. A levels period, his lessons and lame jokes would crack and loosen you up a little. Perhaps it’s the power of the Unicorn king (hahaha), his words of encouragement and reassurance bring forth a little more confidence and hope. He is a tutor, and advisor, and also a respectable figure all his students looked up to.

Thank you Mr Loi, for your patience and guidance all these years. I have gained so much from your lessons and i’m sure the other students will too. May all the Unicorns turn into Antelopes under your guidance, hehe. Thank you once again!

  • I first came to Mr Loi early August in 2013 when it was just three months to the A levels examinations. I was desperate for last minute salvation, as I never scored above an E for any of my tests before and prelims were in a month’s time. In all honesty, I rarely completed my tutorials in school and hardly paid attention during lectures, not even in J1. As a result, I had extremely poor foundation and basically had to relearn the entire syllabus again because I was clueless about everything. Despite being a hopeless case, Mr Loi still took me in (which till today I am eternally grateful for) He painstakingly went through everything again, sometimes even returning back to the basics and working from there. He made sure I was on track by frequently checking my confidence in tackling the various question types from the different chapters and drilled questions from topics that I was still not confident in. Eventually I managed to improve to a C for my prelims after a month of intense math tuition.

Mr Loi is an extremely dedicated, patient and selfless tutor. He will always try his best to answer to the needs of his students, asking his weaker students to come for extra lessons even if it means sacrificing his own leisure time or skipping his meals. He would ensure all concepts are understood clearly by all his students and would go the extra mile to source for various past school papers so that his students are exposed to as many question types as possible and are fully prepared for the A levels. Under Mr Loi’s patient guidance, I managed to clear all the doubts I once had. I also learnt the most effective ways to tackle the different question types in exam papers. After just 3 months of tuition under Mr Loi, I managed to score an A for my A levels math paper. Mr Loi is definitely one of the best tutors out there!

  • Happy teachers’ day

Thanks so much for helping me with my math these past 6 months. I know it is hard to teach math and especially with my weak background and constant U’s in jc1 last year, it really took a miracle to make me as prepared for math as now. I’m not saying that I’m very good now but considering my bad track record from last year, if not for you, I’d probably still be scoring U’s T.T And yes you’re a very good teacher! You have really helped me to understand math and like it much better (not love it yet haha), I’ve never liked math so much! Rest assured I will continue to work hard for my math and try my best to perfect it and get an A! ^^

    Thank you card

To me, you’re one of the most inspiring teachers I have met throughout my life =) before I even took my A levels, you already believed in me and felt that I would be able to do well not only for maths but for all my other subjects as well. At that point, you were the only teacher that told me that and it really encouraged me to give it my all. I’m so glad I chanced upon your tuition centre and decided to enroll for tuition there. Though it was only a short 8-9 months, it felt that you have taught me a lifetime of knowledge. Especially on how to practice and understand rather than memorise. Looking at my J1 records where the highest I ever got for math was an E grade, it really is a wonder how I actually got this A at A-levels hardwork is one thing but having a good teacher is another. I look forward to seeing you help more “U-lovers” like me and help them in life. All the best in life and take care!
