I joined Mr Loi’s tuition in April of my J2 year after recommendation from a friend. I had barely scraped through J1 H2 maths and i desperately needed help. Learning to do math with Mr Loi feels more like learning and applying skills rather than the usual dull way of studying mathematics.

Mr Loi is a kind, patient and fun-loving tutor who cares for his students. He would always give me small pep talks after class to ask me how I am doing and to check in on my other subjects. We would always run beyond 2 hours with some days stretching to 4. Although he occasionally poked fun at my poor math foundations he always follows it up with a word of encouragement and offers help. His methods and explanations are easy to understand and apply making math less of a nightmare for math-haters such as myself.

Even though I continued to fail H2 math throughout J2, he assured me that i was improving and encouraged me to keep working despite attaining a U grade for my prelims. Under Mr Loi’s guidance i learned that there is more to teaching students than helping them attain an A. I learnt that hard work and discipline in reaching for success is a reward in itself. I will not pretend that going for tuition turned my hatred into love for maths overnight.Truth be told i still hate maths. However I feel that Mr Loi, was able to help me overcome the mental hurdle that H2 math is impossible. To me that is what sets Mr Loi apart from other tutors.

I managed to attain an A for H2 mathematics in the 2016 ‘A’ Level examinations. Without Mr Loi’s patience and persistence in coaching me, I am sure i would not have gotten such a good grade. (If you hate maths and want to do something about it, ask Mr Loi. He is good at these things)

I joined Mr Loi in July after a disastrous mid-year examination in JC1, under the recommendation of a senior. Although Mathematics was one of my strongest subjects in secondary school, it certainly wasn’t the case for JC! Mr Loi always focuses on the fundamentals and basics — which was definitely one of the reasons my Math slowly got more stable and stronger as we moved on from topic to topic. Mr Loi also makes it a key point to explain in detail, how a certain formula works and the rationale behind it, making it a whole lot easier to understand the formula — instead of purely memorising it (which is also easier to forget) like most students do.

As someone who is easily discouraged and becomes extremely on-the-edge before examinations, Mr Loi’s light-hearted yet extremely fruitful lessons became my biggest reassurances. He would try his best to prepare us as much as possible, such that we can feel more confident and ready before going in for the paper. Mr Loi’s encouraging words really helped me a lot when I was struggling to cope with the tremendous stress, and the fear of not being able to meet my own expectations. Even though I used to grumble so much at the amount of past year prelim papers he used to make me do, I believe that it is with that amount of practice that I was able to recognise my weaknesses and work on them before A Levels.

Mr Loi’s lesson plan is always structured and detailed, and caters to each student’s needs and weaknesses. Personally, my weakness was in calculus and hence Mr Loi attributed more time to reinforcing my fundamentals and ensuring that I was exposed thoroughly to the various types of calculus questions.

All in all, my A grade for A Levels definitely wouldn’t have been possible without Mr Loi’s sincere efforts in helping me improve! Thank you Mr Loi for your never-ending faith and confidence in me, even when I doubted myself!! :-)

I joined Mr loi in sec 3 and at that point, i was struggling to understand the more sophisticated concepts and topics. This prompted me to source for mathematics tuition and that led me to joining Mr Loi for classes. His classes were tailored to your needs, allowing you to choose specifically to work on your weaker areas and slowly improve through practice. This gave me freedom as a student to target areas where i lack sufficient understanding and consolidate my knowledge and skills before moving on. This was key to allowing me to finish off my high school mathematics journey with good results and more importantly a good foundation to carry on in college level.

Mr Loi is very experienced and detailed when he teaches and his teaching style is one that makes learning simpler yet effective. It made doing mathematics a joy for me and soon it became my favourite subject. His constant reminders and teachings were the basis of my good foundation and made learning at a higher level less daunting and helped me build on my confidence in the subject.

Mr Loi's experience, especially in teaching college syllabus, is very useful as it makes revision very targeted and his large resource of exercises aim at honing your skills for individual topics. Topic by topic, he was able to help me improve my ability and grow my confidence in math, and by the end of A levels, i was able to get an A. This is all thanks to his fine teaching and his flexible and detailed teaching style that helped to make learning mathematics simpler but yet still produce consistent results.

Thank you Mr Loi for everything xp

I joined Mr Loi in April on the year of my A levels after recommendation from a friend. He keeps his lessons light-hearted and it took some time to get used to his teaching style. After the initial stage, it felt more like talking to a friend so I hardly felt discouraged or embarrassed to clarify my ((sometimes dumb)) questions with him. It was tough building on my shaky foundation but Mr Loi was there to guide me all the way. His teaching style makes you feel as if the two of you are fighting this battle together.

Before we get to know a teacher, we usually judge him based on the number of outstanding achievements he brings home for his students. Under Mr Loi’s tutelage, I worked really hard for my A because I thought it was the best way to help him prove to his potential students what an excellent teacher he was. He deserved every single A equally as his students. Till date, he has accumulated close to hundred ‘A’s for A levels.

Mr Loi is very sincere in helping students. He tries his best to help any student reach his fullest potential. I saw him take in very last minute students, even up till 2 months before ‘A’ levels. Math teachers usually try to avoid them because it is very stressful and there is also a high chance they may ~taint the reputation~ of the teachers. However, Mr Loi tries to strategically clear the concepts within the shortest time possible. (But please, you should always seek help ASAP if you think you cmi)

It’s been close to a year since the end of As but I still turn to him for help and advice every now and then. I graduated from his class with a new friend/ teacher and I hope you do so too. All the very best!

Mr Loi is a very awesome and dedicated teacher! =) Even though I only joined his tuition class after JC2 prelims, he took in me nevertheless and was patient as well as understanding. Within the short amount of time to A Levels, he helped me tremendously with my weak Mathematics topics. Mr Loi’s teaching methods are extremely effective as he targets the specific topics which his students feel unsure and relatively poor in. He also teaches individually in a group setting such that each and every student will get personal assistance on their work.

At first, for me, I felt unconfident and thought that an ‘A’ in Mathematics for A Levels was definitely out of the window after receiving my prelim results. Feeling dejected, my friend recommended me to join Mr Loi’s tuition. With time running out, I was skeptical about the improvement that I could achieve. The first few lessons were daunting to me as I came to realisation that many mathematical expressions, formulas and equations did not make sense to me. Seeing that I was struggling and with no time to spare, Mr Loi had me choose some of my weakest topics to work on. Through observing my working methods, he pointed out mistakes and gave me valuable advice such that similar mistakes can be avoided.

Practice makes perfect. This saying definitely applies to Mathematics as well. A variety of questions chosen and given by Mr Loi to complete aided me to build a general idea on how the questions were to be tackled and solved. Mr Loi provided students with many materials and papers to practise and harness their mathematical skills.

Overall, Mr Loi is an extremely experienced and wonderful Maths tutor! His lessons were always fruitful and enjoyable. Thanks to him, I managed to improve staggeringly within a short span of approximately 2 months =) Without him, it would not be possible to achieve an ‘A’. Thank you Mr Loi!!!

I would like to extend a great thank you to Mr Loi for helping me so much throughout my A level journey. I was constantly scoring U grades in J1 and could not keep up with my lessons in school. I joined Mr Loi’s class a month before the J1 promotional exams. From the first day, he knew my foundation was weak and sought to assess my weaknesses by mathematical topics.

Mr Loi is a perceptive and confident teacher and his teaching style is progressive and efficient; it is well-organized and systematic but not dry. He sets the lessons at a suitable pace and constantly looks out for his students. The work environment is comfortable and conducive for asking any questions, and Mr. Loi manages to attend to everyone with great care. He may nag at you sometimes, but it really helps you to remember concepts and also reminds you not to slacken off. The workload is manageable and he always pushes you to be better every week.

Thank you Mr. Loi for pushing me so hard in J2, and for motivating me to start early and spending so much time going through endless prelim papers with me and explaining questions I could not understand so tirelessly and meticulously. Your methods and advice have really helped me a lot.

As a person, Mr. Loi is kind, funny and witty; he really never fails to make his classes laugh. It is hard to feel exhausted in his class, even after a tiring day at school. He selflessly extends his time and energy, and always puts his students first. The progress I have made from last year to prelims this year could not have been possible without your help, your advice and your relentless drilling and tons of math papers. I was really quite shocked I managed to even pass prelims and by the time A-level came around my confidence in math had already increased so much. I was elated when I learned that I scored an A for H2 math in my A-level results, but I knew that I really could not have done it without Mr. Loi’s guidance. He is truly an amazing teacher. Thank you for everything, Mr Loi!!!

Mr Loi has been a wonderful teacher in mathematics. Besides his acute understanding of math concepts, he also has an awareness of the difficulties students face in confronting math questions. This awareness is not praiseworthy unless you can help students to overcome such stumbling blocks – and Mr Loi is precisely able to do so.

Mr Loi structures his lessons in an effective manner to strengthen students’ confidence and competency in mathematics over time, which is especially helpful for students facing major exams such as A levels. With his help I have picked up concepts quickly. Through weekly and ad hoc lessons in my crucial year of study, I managed to get an A for mathematics. ((:

Thank you for teaching me math over the past two years. I have really learnt a lot from you not only in math but in many areas outside math. I have learnt that to be successful in my studies, I have to start from small things/habits. I have always understood this principle but never really applied it to my studies. You played a part in changing how I learned. Thanks so much once again!!!

Mr Loi was my math teacher from Secondary 3 to JC 2, and throughout all 4 years he was indispensable in helping me better understand and apply the mathematic concepts we learnt in school.

He was able to break down complex topics into very concise, understandable concepts and really trained us to work with a spirit of efficiency and excellence.

More than that, he was one of the most committed teachers I have ever been taught by, often spending 3-4 hours with us per lesson while we were preparing for major exams and answering any questions I had even outside of class. I greatly appreciate his dedication to all his students and am so thankful for his generosity in time and knowledge.

I would highly recommend Mr Loi to any of my peers.

Dear Mr LoiloiloiloiloiloiloiloiloiloiLOI!

I don’t know if you’re conscious of it but you have this ability of making people (esp. your students) feel extremely comfortable with you and willing to share stuff with you no matter how unfamiliar or apprehensive the person is. The hours of tuition actually flew by pretty quickly partly because we’re so engrossed in working out the problems you set for us, and partly because you always make the effort to let us loosen up for a while and just take a break to talk about other stuff! If you ask me, I’d prefer to go for tuition at your place like everyday instead of having math lectures and tutorials in school – the environment’s so much less stressful and demoralizing, and you so teach them better than quite a lot of teachers in my opinion. You know when to have fun and when to get really serious with us, which makes an excellent balance because all work and no play and 24/7 Math would make Jack a very dull and sad lifeless boy heheh.

The thing is that you know what, you honestly changed my mentality about Math quite a lot. Since sec school, the environment I’m in really is such that you HAVE to excel because like it or not, you’re constantly being ruthlessly judged on how intelligent you are, and how much you achieve. But you’re totally not like them at all. You do suan us in the really amusing and playful sort of way, but it’s like all in good fun and it motivates us also (: Provided a lot of hilarity amidst all the stress! ‘Your Baby Elephant Story’ really made me think there and then about how I was to approach Math. That day I was super depressed from doing all the APGP and Summation questions (which are NOT SO BAD now) and you had to guide me through the questions quite a lot, plus A levels were looming nearer and nearer. When you asked Emily and I if we wanted to be Baby Elephants and keep having the fixed mindset that Math is simply impossible to excel in, or to break free of my own chains and not give up, I really thought about it and that was the one time that I actually cried in tuition because although your story might’ve been told in a slightly humorous way, the meaning of it, plus loads of the stuff you said to encourage us, made me want to work as hard as possible to the death. (:

THANK YOU for all the random little things you do, you may or may not do them realizing that you’re actually making someone really encouraged and happy and motivated! Thanks for being special and believing the best in people even though you’ve seen the worst, for always being able to emphatize with what your students go through and giving reassurance that there’ll be a better outcome

when I was feeling quite sad over academics and stuff. Thanks for that balance of humour and seriousness which I believe not many others have the capacity to attain and for using the stricter and harsher methods (like during timed practices) cos ultimately they worked a lot better for me! There’s so many other small things that I’m really grateful for but I can’t recall all of them at the moment! I’ll miss going to Novena almost every other day, and chionging all the timed pracs, and of course you guys and the friends that I’ve made here! (: When I look back, I realized that although the improvement in my grades might not have been in great leaps, the important thing that I want you to know is that regardless of the results, I’ve really improved in my understanding in a lot of concepts, have a much more positive attitude towards math and have learnt to have a lot more resilience in getting tough things done! (: Would not have survived my JC years without you really!
